Festive events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Mikhail Kalashnikov

On November 10, celebrations dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the legendary arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov took place in Izhevsk.

Events began with the Divine Liturgy in St. Michael’s Cathedral. The service was performed by Metropolitan of Izhevsk and the Udmurt Republic Victorin, Bishop Ignatius of Chistopol and Nizhnekamsk and clergy of the Udmurt Metropolis.

After the service, a solemn ceremony of laying flowers took place at the busts of Mikhail Kalashnikov and Marshal of the USSR Dmitry Ustinov. It was attended by Chairman of the Government of the Udmurt Republic Yaroslav Semenov, Chief Federal Inspector of the Udmurt Republic Sergey Panov, military commissar of the Udmurt Republic Alexander Komlev, deputies of the State Council of the Udmurt Republic, State Duma of the Russian Federation, members of the Federation Council, representatives of the war organization, labor and law enforcement agencies, arms production, participants of ‘Young Army’ movement, cadet and military-patriotic associations, members of veteran organizations of local wars, representatives of labor collectives, public associations, residents and city guests.

The armies of dozens of countries use the AK-47, recognizing it as the most advanced small arms. In six countries, the Kalashnikov assault rifle was chosen as an element of state symbolism, its silhouette is depicted on the flags and emblems of these states. Mikhail Kalashnikov and Dmitry Ustinov made an indisputable contribution to ensuring the defence capability of Russia and the independence of many countries of the world.

The main exposition ‘Mikhail Kalashnikov. The trajectory of fate’ in the Museum and Exhibition Complex of Small Arms named after M. Kalashnikov is showed again. As the director of the museum, Olga Minervina noted, ‘The exhibition opened its doors to everyone after a complete reconstruction. Now, this is a ‘smart’ exposition, using multimedia and VR technologies, information platforms, touchscreens and 3D models, which the guides can control from their tablets.’

In Izhevsk, there was also a gala concert ‘The War and Peace of Mikhail Kalashnikov’. The theme of the concert is dictated by the phrase, which the gunsmith himself very often repeated, ‘I did not invent weapons to kill people, but to protect my Fatherland’. The war forced the young tank sergeant to invent an assault rifle that not only brought him world fame and glory but also turned the life of this purely peaceful person, who loves quiet nature and composes poetry, in a different direction.

As emphasized by the Chairman of the Government of the Udmurt Republic Yaroslav Semenov, the 100th anniversary of Kalashnikov is a national holiday. ‘The day we can once again thank the legendary arms designer for his contribution to the development of weapons. Today, thanks to Mikhail Kalashnikov, the Udmurt Republic is spoken of as the arms capital of Russia. We rightfully have something to be proud of: today, more than 90% of small arms in Russia are produced in the Udmurt Republic; our legendary Kalashnikov Concern produces more than 20% of small arms in the world. But let us once again recall the words of the legendary arms designer, ‘I created my weapon in order to defend the Fatherland, for the world.’ I think that now he would be proud to see how the percentage of civilian items is increasing at our defence enterprises. As you know, on behalf of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin this year this growth will be more than 10%. I think it would not be an exaggeration to say that Mikhail Kalashnikov became the successor of the great weapons traditions of Izhevsk and the Udmurt Republic/ Having put his whole life into his work, he multiplied and kept it, took care of the factory workers and was sincerely devoted to his work. He was born to become a legend,’ concluded Yaroslav Semenov.

The concert was attended by the song and dance ensemble of the Udmurt Republic ‘Italmas’ named after A. Mamontov, Udmurt State Theater of Folk Song and Dance of the Udmurt Republic ‘Aikai’, soloists of the State Opera and Ballet Theater of the Udmurt Republic and the municipal choreographic ensemble ‘Izhevsk’, male vocal quartet of the Udmurt State Philharmonic Society, participant of the TV show ‘Voice’ Arina Petrova, as well as the vocal ensemble ‘Primavera’.
